TREATING
HYPER-PIGMENTATION

IN BIRMINGHAM

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where certain areas of the skin become darker than others. This is because of excessive melanin production.

This can affect people across all skin tones, although it is more prevalent in darker skin tones. Although often harmless, we know this can knock your confidence.

The Laser Fix in Birmingham is here to help you tackle hyperpigmentation, with long-term solutions.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF
HYPER-PIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation is when skin darkens due to increased melanocytes production (melanin)

. Common causes include:

  1. Sun Exposure: UV rays trigger melanin production, causing age spots and freckles.

  2. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, birth control, or hormonal imbalances can cause melasma (dark patches on the face).

  3. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: Skin trauma (acne, cuts, or burns) can leave dark spots after healing.

  4. Medications: Some drugs (e.g., birth control or antibiotics) can increase sun sensitivity, causing pigmentation.

  5. Age: Age spots develop over time due to accumulated sun exposure.

  6. Genetics: Some people are genetically more prone to hyperpigmentation.

  7. Skin Conditions: Eczema, psoriasis, or conditions like acanthosis nigricans can cause dark patches.

  8. Lifestyle: Smoking, poor diet, or pollution exposure may worsen pigmentation.

  9. Medical Conditions: Liver disease or adrenal disorders can sometimes cause darkened skin.

HYPER-PIGMENTATION
VS MELASMA?

  • Hyperpigmentation is a general term for skin darkening caused by excess melanin due to melanocyte production. It can result from sun exposure, acne scars, inflammation, or medication. It appears as dark spots or patches on any part of the skin.

  • Melasma is a specific type of hyperpigmentation, often triggered by hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy or birth control). It typically appears as symmetrical, brown or gray patches on the face, especially the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip.

Treatment with BBL HERO & MOXI

  • BBL HERO (BroadBand Light) is used to treat hyperpigmentation by targeting and breaking down excess pigment, reducing dark spots and improving skin tone.

  • MOXI is ideal for treating melasma, as it uses gentle fractional laser technology to target deeper layers of the skin, improving pigmentation and texture without causing further irritation or damage.
